What I was Taught, Pt. 2
Did you read blog pt. 1? It’ll give you some context. You see, at this same baptist church where I learned what it meant to be a baptist, I was given so many opportunities to serve. No one ever told me I couldn’t do anything. What an incredible gift! Every child should be so fortunate. After all, it seems to be the way Jesus practiced his ministry.
It looked like this:
singing in worship
offering testimonies about how God was at work in my life before the congregation
memorizing scripture and being encouraged to share it
teaching adult Bible study classes and preaching on youth Sunday
going on mission trips to meet needs of others and share about our love for Jesus
serving on the youth planning council that helped shape student ministries
visiting, along with adults, in the homes of visitors, sick, and shut-in
participating in church business meetings and speaking up for things that mattered to me
even being on the church visioning team that was praying and seeking God’s unfolding plan for the church
Not once did anyone say, that’s not good enough or you can’t do that because you’re a girl. They said, thank you. They offered blessings, encouragement, gratitude.
They taught me that the role of the church is to affirm with God is doing in the lives of others. I owe a debt of thanks to them.
